Incident on a Lake

We gazed upon the water,
you and I,
'neath the trembling ash
old Zephyrus bowed.

Nascent lovers who wondered,
what might lie
'long the way of
this untrodden road.

Still in disbelief,
my eyes refused to quit
a profile framed by froth,
beauty sans permit.

Sans permit indeed,
for never dreamed I
of intrigue such as this
coming to one so shy.

But, lo!, fares a craft
bounced much by each wave.
We turn to the shouts
and look for a save.

Yet, no!, with a crash,
the sloop takes a hit,
and first mate is now
really in for it.

Midst the cringeworthy shrieks
on this a hot day,
with eyes to my lover
as if to say,

"You'll never see such
from me, I avow."
With a silent kiss, she:
"This I do know."
